Minister Walrond pledges swift action if culpability found in teen’s death

Home Affairs Minister Oneidge Walrond has pledged a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation into the death of 16-year-old Altaf King, warning that any criminal or disciplinary culpability established will be dealt with swiftly and in accordance with the law.

“No one is above accountability,” Walrond said in a statement Thursday.
The minister extended condolences to King’s family and appealed to residents of Skeldon and surrounding communities to remain calm and allow the investigative process to proceed without interference.

“I understand the grief and concern being expressed, but it is essential that the truth is established through a comprehensive and independent investigation,” she said.

The Guyana Police Force Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) has launched an immediate investigation into the incident, which occurred on Thursday at about 18:45hrs on Princeton Access Road, Corentyne, Berbice.

According to police, King, of Eliza Mary Race Course, Corentyne, Berbice, was riding motorcycle #CL 5607 when he attempted to evade a police patrol, lost control and collided with a utility pole. He was conveyed to the No. 75 Regional Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The OPR said the investigation will examine all aspects of the incident and that appropriate action will be taken should any culpability be established.
