EPA testing sound levels at Seawall amid push to balance nightlife and neighbourhood peace

The government is moving to implement sound alarms across the country as it seeks to strike a balance between the growing entertainment sector and the tranquillity of neighbourhoods and communities.

President Dr Irfaan Ali announced on Saturday that the Environmental Protection Agency is currently testing the devices on the Seawall to determine a suitable sound level that could support entertainment activity there while ensuring the peace of nearby communities.

“Because of the numerous complaints families would have made, they are now testing to see the levels that are acceptable to allow the entertainment while not disturbing the peace of families and communities,” he said.

He explained that once testing is complete, a suitable level will be set and Seawall operators will be able to make adjustments without the intervention of law enforcement.

The President added that the sound alarms are not intended to stop or hamper entertainment businesses, but to provide them with an opportunity to operate with consideration for others.

“We want to build quality life, quality community service, quality families and quality time,” the President said, adding that “not only in terms of what we spend in entertainment areas, but also how families can enjoy their own private space.”

The President said the sound alarm project is among several initiatives in which the Government is using technology and AI to improve services, communities, and the overall quality of life in the country.
