120 trees, 40 bins and 24 hydrants among plans for Suddie facelift

Suddie’s Model Village transformation will include 120 trees, 40 garbage receptacles and 24 fire hydrants, as Government unveils plans to upgrade key community facilities, improve drainage and roads and strengthen flood protection.
The proposed works were unveiled during a community consultation at the Suddie Primary School, where President Dr Irfaan Ali engaged residents on the planned development and heard their concerns.
Minister within the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development Pauline Sukhai took residents through the proposed interventions in a presentation covering infrastructure, sanitation, transportation, security, recreation and environmental enhancement.
According to the profile presented, Suddie occupies approximately 65 acres and has 143 households, 12 businesses and 17 public and government offices, with an existing road network of approximately 3,305 metres.
Drainage features prominently in the plan, which includes approximately 4,156 metres of drains, 2,605 metres of hard shoulders, 3,054 metres of walkways and five culverts. Approximately 1,259 metres of revetment works are proposed in areas vulnerable to erosion, alongside road rehabilitation.
Fifty-five utility poles have been identified for replacement or relocation, while 40 lights are proposed for improved night-time visibility and 28 CCTV cameras are planned for security. New community signage is also expected.
Playgrounds and recreational spaces will be developed or upgraded, with the Suddie Market, Suddie Ballfield and the surroundings of the Suddie Hospital identified for significant attention.
President Ali said the transformation will be approached in six phases, beginning with assessments and consultations, followed by essential services, flood mitigation and drainage, community facilities, road rehabilitation and, finally, sustainability and maintenance.
Resident Mandy Narine welcomed the proposed investment, saying residents are looking forward to seeing the changes become a reality.
