Women robbed by motorcycle bandits

Two women were robbed at gunpoint by motorcycle bandits around 21:30 hrs on Thursday night at Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara.

The victims — 26-year-old teacher Rayleen Patterson of Parfaite Harmonie and her aunt, Alicia Brown of Sophia — were in Patterson’s yard when they were confronted by two armed men. One of the suspects, dressed in black with a handgun, held the women at gunpoint while his accomplice assisted in the robbery.

The bandits escaped with a gold chain worth approximately $350,000 belonging to Patterson, and $50,000 in cash along with a pair of gold earrings valued at $25,000 from Brown.

The suspects fled the scene on a motorcycle heading west. Police have launched a search, but no arrests have been made. Investigations are ongoing.

Construction worker charged with armed robbery, possession of smoking utensil

Akash Parsaram, also known as “Samsung,” a 21-year-old construction worker from Success, East Coast Demerara, was on Tuesday charged with robbery under arms and possession of a smoking utensil.

Parsaram was arrested on Monday by ranks from the Beterverwagting Police Station following an incident in which he allegedly robbed a 16-year-old trainee woodworker.

According to police, Parsaram is accused of robbing the teenager of one cellular phone valued at $26,000, a leather wallet worth $3,000, and $10,000 in cash. The charge was laid under Section 222(c) of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 08:01.

He appeared before Her Worship Ms. Abigail Gibbs at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court Two, where the charge was read to him. Parsaram pleaded not guilty and was remanded to prison. The matter was adjourned to August 20, 2025, for report.

In a separate matter, Parsaram was also charged with possession of a smoking utensil, contrary to Section 12(1)(d)(i) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act, Chapter 10:10.

He appeared before the same magistrate and pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to one year’s imprisonment and fined $6,000.

Security guard robs Fantasy Game Lounge of $13M

Police are investigating the alleged armed robbery of G$13.1 million, the property of Sylvia Thomas, which occurred on Sunday at about 05:30 hrs at the Fantasy Game Lounge, located at Giftland Mall, Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara.

The robbery was reportedly carried out by a 24-year-old armed security guard attached to Castle Security, who was on duty at the Fantasy Game Lounge at the time. The suspect was armed with a security service-issued 9mm pistol and 17 rounds of ammunition.

Raywat Sankar, 21, a supervisor, was also on duty at the Fantasy Game Lounge during the incident.

Preliminary investigations revealed that around the time of the incident, Sankar exited the cashier area to assist the 27-year-old female floor supervisor in cleaning the gaming area, as there were no customers present.

The suspect, armed with the 9mm pistol, approached both Sankar and the floor supervisor, drew the weapon, pointed it in their direction, and discharged a round into the air. He then demanded that Sankar open the electronic door to the cashier area.

Sankar complied, after which the suspect ordered both him and the female supervisor into the cashier’s room. He then instructed Sankar to open the vault and place all the cash into a garbage basket. The suspect subsequently exited the building with the cash.

CCTV footage from Giftland Mall showed the suspect walking along the Giftland access road, turning west onto the Railway Embankment, and entering a motorcar bearing registration number PZZ 5690, which then drove off in a westerly direction.

Detectives who processed the scene recovered one 9mm spent shell.

Attempts to locate the suspect have so far been unsuccessful. A search of his residence was conducted, but no cash was found. Efforts are also underway to locate the vehicle involved.

Further investigations are ongoing.

Chinese businessman robbed

Zhao Pe Lizhan, a 60-year-old businessman of D’Urban Backlands, Georgetown, was robbed around 18:55 hrs on Wednesday at WF Fast Food Restaurant, located in D’Urban Backlands.
He was relieved of GYD $70,000 in cash by four identifiable suspects—two males and two females—who are all believed to be juveniles.
According to investigations, the victim was seated behind the counter inside the restaurant when he noticed the suspects enter and approach him. Two of them (a male and a female) grabbed him by the neck and hand, while the other two (also a male and a female) accessed the cash register at the counter and stole the day’s earnings.
The suspects then fled westward into D’Urban Backlands.
The scene was processed, and detectives are currently reviewing CCTV footage as investigations continue.

Lusignan pensioner allegedly murdered during home invasion

A 70-year-old pensioner, Deonarine of Lusignan Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara, was found dead in his home early Wednesday morning following what police believe to be a robbery and murder carried out by two masked intruders.

The incident reportedly occurred around 3:30 hrs, when two men dressed in black and wearing ski masks allegedly broke into the one-storey wooden house Deonarine shared with his 69-year-old reputed wife. According to the wife, she had awakened around 1:30 hrs to cook and clean, and while in the washroom, she was ambushed by the intruders—one of whom choked her while the other tied her hands and feet before confining her to the washroom.

Shortly after, she overheard Deonarine calling for her, followed by a brief commotion, which soon fell silent. Upon freeing herself, she found Deonarine lying motionless on his back in the hallway. She immediately contacted her brother, who in turn alerted the police.

Officers arrived at the scene around 6:30 hrs and discovered that $800,000 in cash was missing—$500,000 from under a bed and $300,000 from a black bag in the bedroom. A thorough examination of the body revealed no visible marks of violence, but DNA swabs were taken from Deonarine’s hands. His body was transported to Memorial Gardens Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted.

Investigations are ongoing as police work to identify and apprehend the suspects.

Bandits Rob Golden Spring Supermarket

Police are investigating an alleged armed robbery at the Golden Spring Supermarket, located at Number 66 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, on Tuesday.

According to a police report, the robbery was carried out by four masked men, all of whom were armed with handguns and a rifle. Several individuals were robbed of cash and other valuables during the incident.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the four masked suspects, dressed in hoodies and long clothing, entered the supermarket brandishing firearms. They ordered the victims to lie face-down on the floor and fired several shots during the ordeal. The victims were then forced to hand over their cash and valuables.

The suspects subsequently escaped in a silver Toyota Fielder Wagon (HD 7448) belonging to one of the victims. The scene was processed, and evidence was collected. Investigations are ongoing.

Bandits aged 15, 22, shot dead

Two bandits — 15-year-old Tyrese Adams of Pineapple Street, East Ruimveldt, and 22-year-old Orwin Garraway of 595 East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme — were shot dead last evening by a security guard during a foiled armed robbery attempt at a Chinese supermarket on Hadfield Street, Georgetown.

Police enquiries indicate that four identifiable males of African descent, armed with handguns, attempted to rob the Jai Jai Supermarket, managed by 31-year-old Gan Zhang, at approximately 19:30 hrs last evening.

The bottom flat of the supermarket consists of two cashier booths (on the eastern and western sides). The supermarket is secured by one armed security guard on a 12-hour basis. According to a police report, at the time of the robbery, a 35-year-old security guard was on duty, armed with a 9mm pistol and 15 rounds of ammunition. Two of the suspects entered the supermarket, both dressed in dark clothing, with black ski masks covering their faces and handguns in their hands.

One of the suspects, police said approached the cashier booth on the eastern side, while the other went to the booth on the western side. One pointed his firearm at the male cashier and demanded money, while the other ransacked the opposite booth.

The armed security guard emerged from inside the supermarket and confronted the bandits, who both attempted to flee. One suspect fell to the ground inside the supermarket, while the other ran out and collapsed on the road approximately 15 feet west of the supermarket.

The security guard reported that as he exited the building, he saw two other suspects who had been standing outside. They ran west along Hadfield Street and escaped. Two blue and black Haojue motorcycles — one without a number plate and the other bearing registration number CP 623 — were found parked in front of the supermarket with the keys in the ignitions.

Emergency medical technicians were summoned to the scene, and both suspects were pronounced dead by Dr Kellman of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

The deceased were later identified as 22-year-old Orwin Garraway and 15-year-old Tyrese Adams. The scene was processed, and one Glock 17 pistol with eight matching rounds of ammunition was found next to one of the bodies.

Police noted that inside the supermarket, police recovered one live 9mm round, thirteen spent 9mm shells, and three fragments. Outside, on the road in front of the supermarket, one spent 9mm shell and three fragments were found.

The bodies were examined and it was observed that Garraway had sustained suspected gunshot wounds to his right and left ribs, hands, nose, and right shoulder. Adams sustained suspected gunshot wounds to his upper right shoulder, stomach, lower back, and left hip. The firearm and spent shells were processed, placed in evidence bags, marked, sealed, and lodged for analysis by the ballistics section.

Several individuals were questioned. CCTV cameras attached to the supermarket were reviewed and footage extracted. Searches for the remaining suspects were conducted but they have not yet been located.

The bodies of Orwin Garraway and Tyrese Adams were taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where post-mortem examinations are pending.

Investigations are ongoing.

Chinese supermarket robbery suspects arrested

Chinese supermarket robbery suspects arrested.

Police have managed to arrest two of the suspects involved in an armed robbery at a Chinese supermarket last Friday, as well as recover cash suspected to be proceeds from the robbery, along with two firearms and ammunition.

On Saturday, between 21:00 and 22:30 hrs, a cordon-and-search operation was conducted based on intelligence received. As a result, Superintendent Dufu, along with other police officers, proceeded to Lot 22 Graham Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara.

At this location, they made contact with Cleveland Cross, a 28-year-old male of African descent, employed as a construction worker, who was suspected of involvement in the robbery.

A search of his residence, specifically his bedroom, resulted in the discovery of several suspected stolen mobile phones, a white HP laptop with a charger, a pair of black Clarks boots, grey jeans, and a black ski mask.

According to a police statement, upon being informed of the allegations against him and cautioned in accordance with the Judge’s Rules, he admitted involvement, stating, “Officer, me and me ‘dawgs’ them went on that robbery last night by the Chiney at Success, but I just get some phone cards and I done hussle it out.”

He was subsequently arrested and escorted to the Sparendaam Police Station, along with the recovered items, which were photographed, secured in evidence bags, and logged. He later provided a statement under caution.

Following additional intelligence, the police proceeded to Lot 20 Prince William Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, where they encountered Orwin Smith, a 25-year-old male of African descent employed as a mason. He was preparing to leave the premises with his spouse, Shawana Sobers, a 34-year-old female clothes vendor residing at the same address. Smith was observed carrying a black one-strap bag. A search of the bag led to the discovery of a black FNS-40 handgun, along with a magazine containing eleven 9mm rounds.

When questioned, he confirmed that he was not a licensed firearm holder, responding, “No sir.” He was informed of the offence and cautioned, to which he replied, “Officer, it’s my gun and it’s for protection.”

A further search of the residence resulted in the discovery of another 9mm black handgun inside a haversack in his bedroom.

Based on checks, this firearm had been stolen during a recent robbery under arms committed at the XI Chinese establishment situated at Melanie Public Road, ECD, which occurred on 23rd February 2025. The firearm had been taken from the security guard, Daquan Philadelphia.

Additionally, cash in various denominations totalling $71,420 (Guyana Currency), suspected to be proceeds from the robbery, was recovered.

Both suspects were informed of the allegations and cautioned. Smith admitted ownership of the firearms and ammunition, further stating that the recovered cash was part of his share from the robbery. Shawana Sobers stated that she is not a licensed firearm holder, and told the police: “Officer, it’s Orwin’s guns.”

Both individuals were arrested and transported to the Sparendaam Police Station, where they were profiled and placed in custody.

Investigations are ongoing.

 

Soldier allegedly robbed of motorcycle at gunpoint

Terrie McCalmon, 21, a Private in the Guyana Defence Force, was reportedly robbed of his red and white XR motorcycle (Trade Plate MR 2), valued at $495,000.

The incident occurred at approximately 20:30 hrs on Thursday, Police say.

According to the report, the suspect, an identifiable male armed with a handgun, approached McCalmon while he was cleaning his motorcycle in front of his yard.

The perpetrator, who came from the western direction of a nearby street, pointed the firearm at the victim and demanded that he hand over the motorcycle.

Fearing for his life, McCalmon reportedly ran into his yard, leaving the motorcycle with the key still in the ignition.

The suspect then mounted the vehicle and fled in an eastern direction, successfully escaping the scene.

Police have launched an investigation into the robbery

Teacher shot, robbed of $250,000

Police are investigating an alleged robbery under arms committed on Shawn Thomas, 53, a teacher from Turkeyen, which occurred around 04:55hrs on Thursday.

According to a police report, he was robbed of $250,000 and then shot by an identifiable male armed with a handgun.

Investigations revealed that, on the date and time mentioned, the victim and his wife — a 28-year-old teacher — were in their yard in Turkeyen, which is fenced with concrete, constructing a costume for Mashramani.

At the time, he had the cash in a black side bag, which was hung on his western house door.

The suspect jumped over the northern fence, armed with a handgun in his right hand, approached him, and demanded that he hand over the money.

The victim, fearing for his life, informed the suspect that the money was in his bag.

The suspect then took the bag with the money, and as he was about to leave, the victim raised an alarm.

The suspect discharged a round, hitting the victim on his right upper thigh.

The suspect then jumped the fence and escaped on foot with the cash.

The victim’s wife took him to a private city hospital, where he is currently receiving medical attention.

His condition is stable. Several people have been questioned as investigations continue.
