ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League T20 officially launched

The 2025 ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSL) T20 was officially launched last evening, setting the stage for an exciting return of the international T20 tournament, which will run from July 10 to 18 at Providence Stadium.

Organised under the leadership of Cricket West Indies and chaired by Sir Clive Lloyd, the tournament will feature five top-tier franchises: Guyana Amazon Warriors, Rangpur Riders (Bangladesh), Hobart Hurricanes (Australia), Central Stags (New Zealand), and Dubai Capitals (UAE). The format follows a single round-robin stage with 10 matches leading up to the grand final on July 18.

The launch event introduced the tournament’s trophy and highlighted team details, match schedules, and fan engagement initiatives. Guyana Amazon Warriors will feature international and regional stars including Moeen Ali, Imran Tahir, Shimron Hetmyer, and Rahmanullah Gurbaz.

The tournament is supported by a growing list of sponsors, including ExxonMobil, Limacol, Demerara Bank, ENet, and Champion, all contributing to a prize pool of US $1 million.

Tickets for all matches are currently on sale, ranging from GYD 500 to GYD 5,000, and are available at the Guyana Amazon Warriors Box Office on Camp Street as well as online platforms.

The action begins on July 10 with Central Stags taking on Dubai Capitals in the afternoon match, followed by the home team Guyana Amazon Warriors clashing with the defending champions Rangpur Riders in the evening fixture under lights.

The 2025 Global Super League T20 is set to deliver high-quality cricket, vibrant entertainment, and a celebration of sport and culture in Guyana.

T20 expert Pooran retires from West Indies duty at 29

Nicholas Pooran, one of the world’s leading T20 batters, has retired from international duty with West Indies aged 29.

The Trinidadian has played 167 times for West Indies, but the decision will allow him to concentrate on playing in lucrative franchise leagues.

He had already skipped the ongoing T20 series against England to rest following his time playing for Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

He also has deals in Major League Cricket (MLC) and The Hundred this summer.

Cricket West Indies said : “We salute his achievements and thank him for the moments he has given fans across the region and beyond.

“We wish him all the very best in the next phase of his journey.”

While Pooran is not the first player to retire from internationals in favour of franchise leagues – South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen did so last week – his decision is one of the most significant, given his age and profile.

West Indies captain Shai Hope was asked about Pooran’s decision to skip the England series last week but said that decision would not impact his future selection.

It is understood Pooran told West Indies of his retirement on Monday.

He last played for West Indies in December 2024 in T20s against Bangladesh, but has not played an ODI since July 2023 and does not play Tests.

Pooran is the most capped West Indian in T20 internationals with 106, and the leading T20I run-scorer with 2,275. (BBC Sport)

New Zealand crush Pakistan in T20 opener

New Zealand thrashed Pakistan by nine wickets in the opening T20 of the series in Christchurch.

 

Pakistan were bowled out for 91 at the Hagley Oval – their lowest T20 total in New Zealand – before the hosts raced to their target with 9.5 overs to spare.

 

In Pakistan’s first game under new captain Salman Agha, they lost both openers – Mohammad Haris and Hasan Nawaz – for ducks, were 3-3 after three overs and 14-4 after the six-over powerplay, and only three batters reached double figures.

 

Man of the match Kyle Jamieson took three of the first four wickets on his way to figures of 3-8, while new-ball partner Jacob Duffy claimed 4-14.

 

Khushdil Shah, who hit 32 off 30 balls, was the only batter to make more than 18.

 

Opener Tim Seifert propelled New Zealand’s chase with 44 off 29 deliveries before Finn Allen and Tim Robinson wrapped up victory thanks to an unbroken stand of 39.

 

The second T20 of the five-match series takes place in Dunedin on Tuesday.

 

Pakistan’s previous lowest T20 score in New Zealand came in their most recent meeting in January 2024, when they were bowled out for 92 in pursuit of 135 in Christchurch. (BBC)
